Average Cost of Veneers and Lumineers in Houston, TX.

Cost of Veneers and Lumineers HoustonAre you considering improving your smile and your teeth with Veneers or Lumineers? One of the first questions people ask us is, what are the cost difference between dental porcelain Veneers and Lumineers?
In addition to the cost difference between the two, our dental clients want to know the following:

  • What is the primary difference between Veneers and Lumineers, and which option is best for me?
  • What are the main features and benefits of either?
  • What are the drawbacks, if any, to either?

Let's start by discussing the costs of Veneers and Lumineers in Houston, Texas. The following pricing numbers are general cost estimates, but these can vary by case (schedule a complimentary Cosmetic Consultation and Smile Design with us and we can show you what your smile would like BEFORE any treatment is started), and we will provide you with an exact cost for your case:

  • Veneer average cost: $895 - $1,195
  • Lumineer average cost: $1,095 - $1,395

The next question people often ask is what are the other differences between Veneers and Lumineers? Aren't they the same thing? While they both deliver a similar end result, healthy and beautiful teeth and a NEW smile, there are distinct differences.

Veneers are thin, but very hard and durable custom-made porcelain overlays that are bonded to the front surfaces of front teeth to improve the shape, color, arrangement, gaps, length, and size of these teeth.
Lumineers are very thin and softer custom-made porcelain-like plastic overlays that serve a similar purpose.

Differences between Veneers and Lumineers

 Veneers         Lumineers
Slightly thicker than Lumineers, which means the end product, your smile, is more beautiful and will last longer as compared to Lumineers.  Typically thinner, Lumineers may not last as long as veneers and may not give you as beautiful a smile as compared to veneers.
Requires slightly shaping and altering your natural tooth before applying the veneer. Less ability to create the look you want.
Usually requires numbing to apply the veneers.  Numbing not usually required.

Structural Differences

There are distinct structural differences in Veneers versus Lumineers, and it is this difference that often makes Veneers a better choice if your end goal is to create the perfect smile that will last for years. Because Veneers are slightly thicker and are all-porcelain they allow a dentist more flexibility and control to produce the best smile for you, but more importantly, they provide a much nicer final look for your teeth that will give you your confident smile back.

The primary reason someone chooses Lumineers over Veneers is because Lumineers require almost no reshaping of the teeth. While this feature makes Lumineers easier to apply, their thinness and softness allows them to flex slightly, so they generally begin staining or coming loose sooner than Veneers.

Also, some people feel if their teeth are not shaped, they have the option of being able to go back to their original teeth, if for some reason they don't like the Lumineers. However, in over 25 years of applying Veneers and Lumineers, we have never had someone want to go back to their original teeth.

More On Appearance Differences

In terms of appearance, since Lumineers are so thin, to hide darker pre-operative colors of the teeth, an opaquer is often added under the surface of the Lumineers. This more opaqueness compared to the slightly thicker porcelain Veneers makes the Lumineers have less “Natural Lifelikeness” than Veneers. Because Lumineers are much thinner they can have more of an opaque look to them.

Because Veneers are thicker, they last longer, and look better for a longer period than Lumineers. It is not uncommon for Lumineers to begin to lose some of their original beautiful color somewhere between 4 - 8 years after they have been applied to the tooth, whereas Veneers often look as good as the day they were applied 10, 15, 20, or more years later.

Your Decision

Hopefully this has helped you in your decision between choosing between Veneers or Lumineers. Our personal opinion is that Veneers are the best option with more flexibility to create the smile you always wanted.

We also have before and after photos that you can view here.
