Other Healthy Restorative Materials Available
We often encounter situations where a significant part of the tooth has been damaged and weakened. In these situations the materials of choice would be gold, porcelain or zirconia. All are well tolerated from a biological standpoint and provide the strength and durability that is needed. When the defect to be repaired has grown to a significant size, the strength of the tooth is compromised. Teeth with very large old silver mercury amalgam fillings often have developed fractures or cracks that extend deep into the tooth. These teeth are best restored with a full coverage crown or “cap”, which reinforces the strength of the tooth by completely covering it. A gold, ceramic or zirconia crown accomplishes this.
